“Put yourself out there and allow yourself to fail so you can learn something.” ~Verna Kulish

We recently caught up with Kickstartology alum, Content Designer, crafting-whiz and everyone’s favourite person to have at a party, Verna Kulish. She came to Kickstartology feeling pretty down about her career, which felt like it was stuck. Passed over for opportunities at her place of work, her confidence was low. But Verna persevered, applying the Kickstartology Alignment Framework to her job hunt and rebuilding her belief that she knows things and would be a valuable addition to the right place of employment. And in March, she achieved her star goal, and started a shiny new job at a big financial institution!

What was your big a-ha moment, the point at which Kickstartology felt aligned with what you were hoping for?
I was going through multiple job interviews, all requiring a tech test. I kept making the same mistakes repeatedly and knew I was doing something wrong, but I couldn’t get to the core of it.

Kickstartology taught me how to stop, listen to my body or my head or heart and really dig deep into why I was feeling what I was feeling—or thinking the way I was at the time. In January, I began a new test for the company, and as I started, I caught myself falling into a very old brain pattern of how I did these things and realized that it was for an old job! The opposite of this one I was testing for! I was going into auto-pilot, and I didn’t even realize it! I actually stopped and cried a little because of the epiphany I had.

I took a break, came back to the test, did it completely differently, and killed it! I realized I was going into auto-pilot without paying attention, and Kickstartology taught me how to pay attention and change it!

How did your self-image change?
My confidence returned; I wasn’t afraid to offer opinions at work, and through that, my work got a lot better, my craft improved, and more opportunities came to me.

Where did you encounter the biggest resistance? What were you resisting the most?
I still have some resistance to applying Kickstartology to my physical appearance (weight, muscle building, etc.) My brain is still registering pain the wrong way, and I’m working on that (just work through it, etc.)

What’s your favourite Law of Alignment? Is there a sentence or a thought that you keep going back to?
I can’t speak highly enough about “the Model.” It has helped me align better than anything before. It’s not easy, and it takes practice, but I’m getting so good at changing my reactions to things and looking to see how I can change what I think or what I want so that I can change my reactions too. It’s so liberating! And also, the thought I come back to so many times is “you can’t watch two movies at once,” and it helps me focus.

What advice do you have for someone considering coaching as a path forward?
A lot of this stuff feels like something you should have known for a long time because it’s all very natural. And it will become so natural the more you practice it. It’s all very logical but take your time, put your thought into it, and it will all come together and flow.
