The Idea from Nowhere
I have a complicated relationship with the whole “manifesting” thing. At the risk of sounding cheesy, I think of it as the little spark of magic that seems to bring things together when you commit to an idea with your full heart without getting attached to the specific outcome. The more I coach, the more often I see this spark come out in surprising ways.
Here’s the story: A few years ago my friend Maxime asked me what I would do with my coaching business if I didn’t need the money and I knew I could pull it off. I took a beat and then the following came out of my mouth… even though I had never consciously conceived of this:
Adventure coaching, specifically, a bunch of cool people go on a safari, throw in a touch of Alignment Coaching to amplify the transformation, and then the gorillas of course.
It makes sense, combining my love of coaching with my safari and gorilla trek dream, along with my craving for more in-person experiences that make you feel alive. But I did need the money, had zero experience with this sort of thing, and planning complicated logistics is my idea of hell. The idea was thrown on the “love that, but not today and I don’t know how” pile.
The Idea Lingering
I didn’t know it yet, but I was entering a pretty rough time personally. Through a bunch of ups and downs, this adventure coaching safari idea lingered (What was ironically amusing to me at the time is how many people in my life seemed to be casually going on safaris). At one of my lowest points, amidst huge uncertainty, I was doing some self-coaching, and asked myself the following: What do I want so badly that I will commit to making it happen even if I don’t know how or when?
My answer (direct quote): #1. See the f*cking gorillas.
I started googling safari and gorilla tours for fun and bookmarking for the “one day”, but these felt like a far away consolation prize compared to my vision of going with people I love or leading an adventure coaching trip.
The WTF Moment
And then six months ago, my neighbour Devin, a leader in the travel media business, casually told me that she was working on a new project that had some overlap with my coaching business: Travel for people who want to wake something up, and capitalize on the inner shift that meaningful travel can create. She had just completed the first tour and was thinking about the next.
Without thinking it through, I told her that I would like to volunteer as a coach for the trip, and I would like to do a safari, followed by a gorilla trek. And she didn’t just laugh and dismiss me, instead, we booked some time to talk about that idea! What???
So it’s happening.
The Follow-Through
Here’s the thing though: It didn’t work out quite like my fantasy version of adventure coaching. In that version, money was irrelevent, and my group was all booked! Real life is always messier than we imagine it will be. Getting here took a big leap of faith, in fact it took multiple leaps from both Devin and myself, as well as getting through some basic self-doubt and uncertainty because this is a new thing but the momentum built.
Devin is a pro with the travel logistics since she knows all the right people to set up a mind-blowing experience while keeping in mind a reasonable budget, and she loves making the details perfect. We have sold half the spots and we’re looking for the right people to fill the rest (co-ed FYI).
Wanna Come?
This trip is for people who want an experience that actually makes them feel alive in a way that doesn’t disappear when they get home. In practical terms, that looks like long days out with animals that don’t care who you are or what you do, early mornings, and being dropped into a place unfamiliar enough that your usual mental defaults don’t come with you.
Logistically, we’ll be travelling May 31–June 13 for the safari and Zanzibar, with an optional extra week for those who want to join the gorilla trek.
I still don’t know if I manifested a safari. I do know it exists now, and if you felt a flicker of “maybe,” that might not be an accident.
