Don’t have time? The brief:

  • Safe mode can become a long-term habit that looks functional but quietly disconnects you from yourself.
  • Drifting often happens gradually, through familiar routines that seem harmless until they flatten everything.
  • Reconnection starts when you do something unfamiliar, hold through the part where it feels pointless, and keep going long enough for something real to happen. Expect inconvinience.

The full piece goes deeper and makes the vague part clearer.

The Word That Keeps Showing Up in Coaching

Clients keep using the same word lately: untethered.

I’ve felt it too this year. It’s a sense of not being quite here, but also not being anywhere else. It’s like we’re all in some kind of giant in-between waiting for whatever comes next. It’s a feeling of slight detachment from places, from people, and from things that used to feel like home, or things that used to feel like you.

And when everything feels uncertain and unpredictable, there’s a tendency to stop making decisions. Not always consciously, but there’s a hesitation to rock the boat. So we default to what we already know and repeat what’s familiar because at least it’s clear and feels safe. It’s living in safe-mode.

Safe mode keeps the surface level of life smooth and this can show subtle ways. For example, you start micromanaging everything so nothing unpredictable can sneak in. You keep conversations at arm’s length by talking about other people’s problems, sharing podcast recommendations, or defaulting to “I’m just really busy” because it keeps anyone from asking how you are. And you avoid your own thoughts by flooding your brain with scrolling, dumb little phone games, or productivity daydreams where you finally reorganize your entire life.

The irony is that this smoothness, this lack of friction is exactly what lets the rope slip loose. And that’s how a boat gets untethered and winds up drifting away.

Feeling Untethered Flattens Everything

Deep, right? Let’s take it up a notch. That surface-level smoothness doesn’t just protect you from discomfort, it flattens everything. Over time, you stop feeling the pull of real desire.

And here’s the thing: When you’ve been in safe mode for so long that it’s become autopilot, you can’t just tie yourself back to the old dock. You’re too far, and it might not even be there anymore. And furthermore, when you don’t know what’s on the horizon, which way do you go?

It’s discombobulating because to feel tethered again, you need to spark real desire, but there’s nothing clear to want. And when there’s no clear pull, it’s not a question of motivation because even the idea of effort feels pointless.

How to Break the Pattern and Reconnect

So you have to start with yourself. Discovery means trying something different, something not in your usual pattern. Go somewhere new, have a different conversation, or say yes when you’d normally say maybe later.

It’ll feel inconvenient, you can count on that. We’re wired to pick the path with the least resistance, because survival doesn’t care if you’re fulfilled. But getting out of autopilot takes friction. And sometimes it’s the shrug-level decision that knocks something loose.

You don’t know where the first domino is. You don’t know what might lead to something else. But if you want a little serendipity in your life, or coincidences that make things click, you have to give the universe something to work with. You can’t do that from the couch. (Basically it’s inconvenience or existential numbness. Pick your battle.)

This is a time of uncertainty, yes. But that untethered feeling makes it easy to stop taking control of the things you actually can control, and that’s how you drift further out. The more disconnected you feel, the less likely you are to interrupt the pattern. So interrupt it. Start where you are, start small, start badly…just start.

What Coaching Actually Does When You’re Feeling Untethered

This is what we do in coaching. It’s not a podcast that makes you feel seen, it’s the moment you realize seeing it hasn’t changed a thing. It’s not your best friend saying ‘you’ve got this,’ it’s someone saying ‘sure, but how’s that working out for you?’ and then sitting down to figure out what actually might. It’s not an inspiring quote, it’s finding the line you’re ready to cross.

The Good News About Feeling Untethered

The good news? Nothing feels more alive than doing something your nervous system strongly advises against. Even when it’s inconvenient.

Or just yell “I’m manifesting” while the current drags you to Detroit.
