You Are At a Crossroads

But It Might Not Be Obvious

Some crossroads are obvious. Countless movies and books have been dedicated to the trials and tribulations of a heroine on the precipice of a life defining decision* The great thing about an obvious crossroads is that there’s a clear decision to make in order to move the plot along.

  • Should I break up with him?
  • Do I want to accept this new job?
  • Is it time to have kids?
  • Should I get bangs?

Hidden Crossroads

But not all crossroads are obvious. Often crossroads come up and we don’t even notice them or realize that we are making a decision that will have a lasting impact.

The small decisions we make each day all add up to take us down a particular road. Over time repeated decisions become habits, what we do on auto-pilot and a part of our personality and way of life. As James Clear of Atomic Habits says, “Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement”.

Think of the following:

  • Settling for a job that you are enjoying less and less until you realize that it’s gotten to the point where every Sunday night you get that full-body dread of going back to work on Monday
  • Working at the expense of spending time with your family
  • Indulging in complaining until it becomes the new normal
  • Choosing to watch Netflix instead of going to bed at a reasonable time
  • Deciding to wait to start the new thing when you have more time

Each of those things involves making a decision, but usually, it doesn’t even feel like a decision. It’s easy to underestimate the importance of these decisions in the grand scheme of things. We let our subconscious handle a lot of these decisions.

So here’s the thing: The only way to change our results is to get out of auto-pilot and make different decisions.

You are always at a crossroads because every day you have the ability to change where you are going even if it means off-roading.

So what road are you on? Is it taking you where you want to go?
Going on a different road doesn’t need to be harder or take more effort, but it does require you to make a decision. The sooner you get on the right road, the sooner you get to where you want to go.
